Royal Palace of Madrid - Palacio Real de Madrid

Steeped in history, the palace occupies the site of a Muslim-era fortress or Alcázar built in the 9th century during the reign of Emir Muhammad I of Córdoba. During the late middle ages, the palace was the residence of the Trastámara monarchs. 

On Christmas Eve 1734, the Alcázar was destroyed by a fire that originated in the rooms of the French painter Jean Ranc. The fire lasted four days and completely destroyed the old Alcázar, whose remaining walls were finally demolished in 1738.

A new palace was built from scratch on the same site under the direction of the Bourbon kings. Following a Berniniesque design, construction spanned the years 1738 to 1755.

The main facade of the Palace that one can see today faces the Plaza de la Armeria.  The facade consists of a two-story rusticated stone base giving rise to Ionic columns on Tuscan pilasters framing the windows of the three main floors. The upper story is crowned by a large balustrade. The balustrade had been embellished with an array of statues of saints and kings before King Charles III directed that these be relocated elsewhere to give the building a more classical appearance.
